5 Essential Elements You Need for a Relaxing Evening at Home

5 Essential Elements You Need for a Relaxing Evening at Home

Spend a relaxing evening at home and dive deeper into your main character syndrome.

Romanticize your relaxing evening with essentials that complete the fantasy. Written and directed by Nora Ephron.

If you grew up watching legends Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts establish absurd expectations for dating (and perhaps less relevantly, the appearance of the female form in trench coats), you know a night of solitary relaxation is pertinent to the character arc of the lead. As an independent, self-reliant person, your relaxing evening is obviously motivated by your innate desire to rest and recharge. Duh. However, if you happen to fall in deep, complicated love with Tom Hanks through months of back-and-forth email correspondence following the night in question, then so be it!

For those of us easily swayed by FOMO, it can be tough to opt for a solo night in, rather than a party where there’s potential for drama to unfold. Truth be told, nights at home are supremely underrated and most parties lack the airing of dirty laundry altogether. A night in allows for time and space to focus on yourself. Take advantage of that time with these tips to transform your basic night of rest into a self-care party for one.

red wine

These are the definitive essential elements for a soothing, solo evening fit for the silver screen!

Lock your phone in a safe and bury it until morning light

Or just put it on Do Not Disturb. I promise your fans can wait until morning, or at least until you crawl into bed after your evening of relaxation. Focus on being present, rather than stalking randoms from high school on Instagram. I’ll give you the short and sweet — they’re all married with medium cute babies.

Takeout, because cooking is for chumps

Remove the responsibility of cooking from your plate, and replace it with your favorite takeout meal. Opt for a noodle-based dish to emulate a classic early 2000s protagonist whose only “flaw” is that she eats SO much, but never gains weight. Mazeman (ramen without the broth) and carbonara are two incredibly decadent options, both of which will leave you feeling satisfied, glamorous, and the perfect amount of bloated.

Bathe in bubbles galore

A night of relaxation isn’t complete until you transform into a wrinkly, gorgeous prune in the bath. Grab some epsom salt, a few warm scented candles, and a generous heaping of bubbles for the perfect bathing experience. Scientists have proven that even the most tightly wound individuals are physically incapable of resisting the relaxing combination of warm lighting and scrumptious smells. They’re even hypothesizing that the duo could be the solution to world hunger! Pro tip: take a quick shower beforehand, so you don’t feel like you’re sitting in your own filth, unless you’re into that sort of thing.

Delicious drinks are a necessity

Splurge on a quality red wine (read: anything over $4) and let the night begin! If you’re not much of a drinker, opt for some herbal tea instead. I love brewing up a fruity herbal tea after a long, hard day of writing blog posts. Any drink in an aesthetically pleasing glass or mug will fulfill the beverage requirement. But you definitely need something to hold and sip as you stare off into the distance and contemplate the human condition, or think about the barista from your local coffee shop and wonder, “What’s he up to tonight?”

Consume comforting media

Allow yourself to get lost in a book or movie. Some films that are guaranteed to give that warm, fuzzy feeling include Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), 13 Going on 30 (2004), and 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). Alternatively, give Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine a read if you’re in the mood for some hilarious, heartwarming fiction. If you want to feel like you’re hanging out with your best friend, opt for any one of three memoirs by Mindy Kaling, or The Wreckage of My Presence by Casey Wilson.

Incorporate these five elements into your relaxing evening and step into the role of the main character. Show us how you romanticize your night in by tagging @mobilestylesapp on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter!
