Often times, the role of women in our history has been overshadowed by men, who get more recognition for seemingly smaller accomplishments. But, we want to change and rewrite this pattern by raising awareness of the amazing accomplishments that can be credited only to women. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re going to highlight some of the most iconic women in history. From activists to politicians to artists, here are 5 women whose names should never leave your brain.

Rosa

Rosa Parks

There is no doubt that her boldness and bravery makes her one of the most iconic women in history. Her actions were most notable in the American South during the 1950s, when many public spaces were segregated between Blacks and whites. In 1955, Rosa parks was approached by a white man who ordered her to give up her seat to him on a Montgomery, Alabama, public bus. She refused, which led to her arrest. This racist act prompted her to advocate for a boycott of public buses and other segregation acts in the south.

Parks founded the NAACP, which drew more attention to these racist acts and led to segregation laws being ruled as unconstitutional by the courts. She continued her social justice and advocacy work in Detroit, Michigan, and became known as one of the most powerful voices of the later Civil Rights Movement.

Amelia Earhart

Many of us likely already know the tragic story of Amelia Earhart. She was the definition of a powerful woman. She made history as the first woman to complete a solo flight trip across the Atlantic ocean.

Earhart was always one to defy gender norms. She played on a basketball league when she was a teenager, took classes to learn how to work on cars, and briefly attended university. She picked up an interest for aviation in 1920 when she took her first flying lessons. She stuck with it and got her pilot’s license the following year. Her first attempt to fly around the globe led to her disappearance and presumed death in 1937, though she was the first woman to ever attempt this flight, and one of the most iconic women pilots ever.

Marie

Marie Curie

The field of science is one that is especially oversaturated with males. The accomplishments of these men too often overshadow those of women in the exact same profession. Marie Curie is an example of one of the most iconic women in STEM in the 20th century.

Curie discovered the elements radium and polonium, led the development of a portable x-ray machine, and dubbed the term “radioactive.” She was awarded two Nobel prizes, and to date is the only person in history to win two of these prizes for different science fields.

She was faced with ongoing discrimination and harassment during her career due to voyaging into such a male-led field of work. Still, she persevered!

Maya

Maya Angelou

Angelou had a very rough upbringing before becoming one of history’s most iconic women. She was a victim of assault and trauma, which left her unable to speak for many years. Eventually, she came into her voice through writing. She wrote stories and poetry about equality, women’s rights, and freedom, and even became friends with Malcolm X and MLK during her career.

Angelou published “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” in 1969, which summarized her experience growing up as a Black girl and facing several hardships. This was the true launch of her writing career. Angelou lived on to be an outspoken social justice advocate for many years before passing away in 2020.

woman

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Known simply as RBG for most of her political career, Ginsburg was one of the most outspoken gender equity supporters in the Supreme Court since her nomination to the role by then-President Bill Clinton in 1993. Before the Supreme Court, she was a judge and attorney with an undying dedication to the principal of equal justice under the law.

She graduated Harvard Law School, where her class of 500 was composed of just nine women. She spent much of her law career studying gender discrimination, and won five out of six cases before the Supreme Court in partnership with the ACLU. Ginsburg passed away in 2020 after serving on the Supreme Court herself for nearly 30 years.
