From Cheugy to Trendy Overnight: Trend Evolutions Over Time

Fashion trend evolutions can happen in the blink of an eye. Looking at past trends can influence your current style and aesthetic.

Fashion is constantly changing, creating trend evolutions and transformations with each year.

Turning our eyes to the past can inspire the moment and inform us on what might come in the future.

The only constant variable in life and fashion is that they’re constantly changing. Looking at fashion trend evolutions can give us a broader perspective of the past, culture, and what’s to come.

What goes around comes around

As the saying goes, “History often repeats itself.” Although a bit overused, this statement also applies to fashion trends. It’s not uncommon to see a resurgence of specific fashion pieces and aesthetics. For example, mom jeans from the ‘90s have had a strong return in the modern-day.

Not all styles and garments will shine twice in the limelight — however, we can look at history and pull inspiration from the past to influence current trends.

‘90s trends

The ‘90s were filled with iconic styles and moments influencing modern-day culture. Street and hip-hop took center stage, inspiring youth across America and the globe. In fact, even a few accessories like Coogi sweaters, bucket hats, and scrunchies have come in and out of style over the years.

Conversely, grunge music and aesthetics became more pronounced during the ‘90s. Bands like Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and even Pearl Jam created a darker style with ripped jeans, leather jackets, and silver accessories.

‘00s trends

Fashion trends were a wild ride from 2000 to 2010. The early 2000s were filled with bright color palettes and reflective metallic prints. Lest we forget denim, denim was a defining trend throughout the 2000s and could be found in jackets, shirts, and hats.

Various aesthetics and subcultures such as emo, scene, streetwear, and athleisure became more distinct. Each of these styles has influenced modern-day trends in some form.

‘10s trends

The 2010s might feel like last week, but fashion trends have evolved dramatically. During this period, aesthetics and subcultures became even more diverse with prominent streetwear, normcore, internet styles, and of course, athleisure.

The 2010s also brought more inclusivity and diversity. Runways were filled with people of all shapes, sizes, orientations, and sexualities. Plus-size brands and LGBTQ+ support took center stage, transforming the fashion landscape forever.

Not to mention, brand iconography and consumerism were highlighted in the industry. If you were in vogue, you had pieces from Supreme, Bape, Off White, and other designer logos.

Current trends

Current style trends are changing on a near-monthly basis, causing a whirlwind of aesthetics and looks. Subcultures are becoming more niche and diverse with techwear, K-Pop influences, and other internet styles.

Previous styles, such as athleisure, are still trendy but lean toward minimalism and monochromatic palettes. In fact, brand iconography might be losing steam while clean and sleek silhouettes reign supreme.

It might be too early to put the finger on current-day trends. Fashion in the 2020s is still finding its footing and pulling inspiration from runways, Y2K styles, and grunge aesthetics. However, more and more looks are being supported, including androgynous and unisex outfits. It’s not uncommon to see nail polish, makeup, and revealing pieces sported by men and women alike.

The impact of celebrities, influencers, and social media

Although it’s hard to pinpoint the current fashion landscape and where it’s headed, the impact of social media is alive and well. Celebrities, influencers, and viral social media posts can transform the fashion landscape in a single evening.

With the rise of platforms like TikTok, trends are gaining steam and losing popularity just as fast. There are groups of people on social media platforms showcasing their outfits, fashion hauls, and style tips. This ease of access and communication allows aesthetics to spread globally. Social media and celebrity influence are a good thing for the fashion industry, as they keep things on a knife's edge.

Fashion trend evolutions happen over time and sometimes, overnight. With the rise of social media and celebrity influence, what’s vogue is constantly changing. However, you can look at the past to influence your current style or aesthetic. One thing’s for sure, though, wearing what you like will always be trendy.
