How to Find the Right Dermatologist
Taking care of your skin and partaking in occasional dermatology visits is a must. Here's how to find the right dermatologist for you.
Much like looking for any good doctor and/or dentist that works well for you, finding the right dermatologist that is an expert in your skin type, and one who you have a good, confident relationship with, is instrumental for your health.
Ideally, you should choose a dermatologist whose specialty meets your needs. Whether your needs are surgical, cosmetic, medical, or a combination, there's always an expert dermatologist ready to help you. While one dermatologist may focus on skin blemishes such as acne and psoriasis, another dermatologist might perform skin cancer removals.
Before making an appointment with a dermatologist, you should do some background work and verify their credentials. Most dermatologists list their credentials and medical license certification information with the American Academy of Dermatology or the American Board of Dermatology. Much of this information can be located online for easy access. This also allows you to identify the dermatologist’s experience.
Identify dermatologists who work well with your skin type and coloring. Yes, your natural skin color will affect your dermatology needs. Some skin types form pigment easily, so if you have olive skin or a darker complexion, as opposed to fair skin, you may need to find a dermatologist who treats hyperpigmentation. Expertise by skin color and skin type is important when administering scar treatments such as microneedling and lasers.
Make sure to select a dermatologist who you are comfortable with and you feel supports your concerns. Find one who shows an interest in you as a person, as well as your medical/skin issues. As with all doctors, if after the first visit you don’t feel at ease, or you feel like you haven’t made a good connection, shop around until you find a dermatologist that meets your expectations.
Like all medical decisions, you will need to choose a dermatologist who is covered under your insurance plan or will be willing to assist you with a payment plan. Medical care isn’t cheap, and you generally get what you pay for. Most cosmetic surgeries and tattoo removals aren’t covered under insurance.
