Build you home bleaching kit right at home!
The holiday season is a time of joy and cheer, which means lots of laughs and smiles spent with family and friends. This special time of year should not include you feeling self-conscious about the color of your teeth. After all, there’s one holiday accessory that never goes out of style - a sparkly, white smile! To help you put your best smile forward, we’ve compiled a list of common household ingredients that you can use for home bleaching, which experts claim can actually whiten your teeth.
1. Baking Soda
Baking soda is a popular home remedy for whitening teeth, and chances are that you might already have it at home. Several well-known toothpaste brands even highlight this ingredient in their products. Some popular examples include: Crest Baking Soda & Peroxide Whitening with Tartar Protection Toothpaste, Colgate Baking Soda & Peroxide Whitening, and Arm and Hammer Advance White Extreme Whitening Baking Soda and Peroxide Toothpaste. To use baking soda for teeth whitening, simply mix it with water to create a paste, and brush away.
2. Turmeric
Lately, turmeric has been a buzzworthy ingredient for its health benefits, including its anti-inflammatory properties. Some also swear by its ability to help whiten teeth. A popular tumeric recipe for whitening teeth combines coconut oil, turmeric, and, sometimes, a little baking soda. Check out this video from influencer Farah Dhukai, to see how it’s done!
According to Colgate.com, besides teeth whitening properties, turmeric also may have another oral health benefit. "A study from the Journal of Natural Science, Biology and Medicine suggest curcumin (the active chemical compound in turmeric responsible for the bright color) might have some benefit in treating gingivitis and periodontal disease, preventing plaque formation and alleviating dental pain."
3. Strawberries
Listerine.com shares that strawberries "are packed with an enzyme known as malic acid, which naturally makes teeth whiter." Here’s how to use the ingredient for a dazzling smile. Mash up strawberries with baking soda and then spread the mixture on your teeth. Leave it on your teeth for 5 minutes. Then, brush off your teeth with your toothbrush and regular toothpaste. Rinse, and use a little floss to get rid of any residual strawberry seeds. (Recipe via Health.com)
4. Oil (for Oil Pulling)
Swish around oil in your mouth for up to 20 minutes, and then spit it out. This is known as oil pulling, and you can use common household oils such as coconut oil or olive oil for this method. It’s an ancient ayurvedic technique that has been used to whiten teeth, and for other health benefits, for hundreds of years.
5. Celery and Carrots
Redbook shared that the high water content in these vegetables helps wash away debris and strengthen gums. That’s a great excuse to eat your veggies!
Before making any big changes to your oral hygiene routine, consult your dentist with any questions about teeth whitening and health safety. And remember, according to the American Dental Association, it’s a good idea to brush your teeth twice a day with a whitening toothpaste with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. The ADA also recommends avoiding things that can stain your teeth like coffee, tea, red wine and smoking.
