How and why jade rollers became so popular in beauty
If you’ve seen videos of beauty influencers delicately tending to their skin with what looks like a tiny rolling pin, don’t be alarmed.
It’s all the rage — in fact it has been used for centuries.
The tool, known as a facial roller or a jade roller, has its roots in Ancient Chinese Medicine. In fact, there's even evidence of the flat crystal stones being used on the skin in China as far back as the 7th century! Jade, apart from just looking pretty, is considered the stone of heaven due to its relaxing, healing, and strengthening properties.
As for the roller itself, it’s long been used as a detox tool; sources say jade rolling reduces tension held in the muscles, increases lymphatic drainage (a beauty industry obsession that doesn’t show signs of abating), reduces stress, and increases energy. Is it any wonder we all got hooked?
First, the action of rolling the handheld tool across your face is said to increase circulation and blood flow, thus helping overall skin tone and enhancing brightness. As an expert explained, “The oxygen from increased circulation allows the skin to release toxins and calms inflammation. Improved circulation from regular massages can make skin look brighter and more awake." Sounds like just what the skincare doctor ordered on a Monday morning!
In terms of tips and tricks, many like to place their rollers in the fridge for a cooling, de-puffing addition to their morning routine. Others like to place theirs in warm water before rolling over their serums, as they believe it helps the formulas penetrate deeper. You can even go all out, and roll two in tandem for a next level at-home facial experience.
Now for the new age stuff. We all know that people get very obsessed with crystals, but it turns out it's for good reason. Jade is typically associated with healing and protecting against negative energy. People also swear that using the stone re-balances qi. (Qi is the life force energy that runs through the body.) In case you needed another reason to dabble in this ancient skincare wisdom, jade is also said to be good for longevity and inspire ambition.
So, if you’re on the hunt for something that can both carve your cheekbones and give you some chill, maybe you’ve found what you’re looking for.
