National Hairstylist Appreciation Day

This National Hairstylist Appreciation Day, we want to thank hairstylists for all the things they don’t get credit for . . . let’s not pretend their job is as simple as just cutting hair.

Hairstylists are arguably some of the best listeners. Whether it’s listening to you complain about your family, friends, or job; or paying the closest attention to that celebrity hairstyle you’re dying to recreate for yourself; hairstylists are always listening to us. Some might say they are unglorified therapists. (And they definitely don’t get paid for that!).

Not only do they listen to and deal with grown adults' problems, but they’re also babysitters half the time. Have you ever witnessed a child getting their hair cut? They’re unruly, can’t sit still to save their lives, and lots of them absolutely hate getting their hair cut. These hairstylists are dealing with all kinds of behavior problems, all while trying to take a blade near the scalp. That is talent!

Let’s also not forget all of the training and schooling hairstylists go through. Some hairstylists go to hair school, where they learn how to cut, color, and style, amongst other things. However, lots of hairstylists complete cosmetology school, where they learn not only about the hair, but also about skin, nails, and makeup. This schooling, on average, takes several years to complete.

They are artists and color geniuses! I don’t know about you, but if someone came up to me with red hair and wanted to dye it blue, I wouldn’t have the first clue where to begin. Color theory is a difficult skill to grasp and takes a lot of practice. Hairstylists are absolute pros at it!

Above all else, we should appreciate hairstylists because they give us the tools we need to feel confident in our own skin. Some people don’t care much about their hair, but for some people, it’s their security blanket. Having beautiful locks can do a number for self confidence, and we have hairstylists to thank for that!

There are multiple ways you can show your appreciation to your hairstylist. Send an encouraging message, surprise them with a random tip, or try out a new hairstyle!
