Know the Differences Between Men’s and Women’s Skincare
“The best foundation you can wear is healthy, glowing skin.” Skincare is the most important part of our daily routine, for both men and women.
However, men’s skincare looks a bit different than women’s. Why, you may ask?
Men and women have different hormones, and therefore different types of skin altogether. Men possess the hormone androgen (or testosterone), which makes their skin 25% thicker and have a tougher texture. Men’s skin also contains a higher percentage of collagen, a protein that aids in skin elasticity, than women. This is why men age physically at a rate approximately 15 years slower than women. Men also have facial hair, and shaving acts as an extra exfoliant, getting rid of dead skin, and therefore makes them look even younger. (Can someone please tell me how men got so lucky in the skin department?)
On the other hand, women’s sebum production is half that of men. Sebum is the oily, waxy substance produced by our sebaceous glands. Because of this, women’s skin is less oily than men’s, and therefore less prone to acne. (I guess women can be lucky too!)
So how does skincare differ between the sexes?
Let’s start with men . . .
Due to having higher levels of sebum, men’s skin is more oily and therefore less prone to being dry. Because of this, it’s important to make sure men don’t use heavy or thick products, as they could clog up their pores and make them more susceptible to breakouts. Another vital thing for men: shaving cream. Although shaving does make the skin appear younger because the dead layers are coming off, it also makes it more sensitive and stressed. For this reason, it’s vital for men to have a quality shaving cream product as their go-to to counteract the harmful effects.
What about women?
Where to begin! We’ve got creams, oils, gels, cleansers, toners . . . you name it! Women’s skincare products are much more complex than men’s. Many of the products women use are moisturizers, because due to their low sebum levels, their skin is more prone to being dry. But besides moisturizers, women have different products for each possible skin issue — wrinkles, dark circles, aging, oil control, etc.
