Get ready for a clean home and even cleaner conscience by making the switch and going green!
We’ve compiled the most helpful recommendations to make your house look as good as you feel for ditching those old, harmful cleaners.
DIY Products are Your Best Friend
If you didn’t become absolutely captivated by a niche hobby during quarantine, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We’ve found a skill that’s completely bragworthy and doesn’t leave you with a dozen loaves of homemade banana bread. Introducing: your next obsession (drum roll, please)!
DIY cleaning products!
Not only will you have a new topic to bring up during awkward silences with strangers, but you’ll also be aware of every single ingredient you use to clean your home. Here’s one of our favorite recipes for an all-purpose DIY cleaner:
Combine one part white vinegar, one part water, a lemon rind, and rosemary sprigs into a spray bottle. Let it sit for about a week, and boom! You’re done. Simple and effective. Don’t use this little concoction on granite, though, as it can cause damage. And definitely don’t use it around health guru Gwyneth Paltrow, unless you want to force her into retirement.
Do Your Research
It’s totally understandable if you don’t have the time or desire to make your own cleaning products. While you might not feel like a scientist when checking out at Target, you’ll definitely feel better purchasing safe cleaning products instead harmful ones.
Unfortunately, however, according to Anna Reade, a staff scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, there’s no regulation when it comes to brands spouting claims that they’re “natural” or “nontoxic,” since these words aren’t legally defined. As a result, it can be extremely difficult for consumers to decipher which products are actually safe. Reade suggests a few sites to consult in making your decisions. The Environmental Working Group , the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Made Safe each have their own requirements for determining the safety level of a product. When used together, these sites can be extremely helpful in determining which cleaning products are best for you and the planet!
Products We Love
Based on these sites, here are a few of our favorite products:
Dr. Bronner's — Sal Suds Biodegradable Cleaner
The Doctor is in! This biodegradable, all-purpose, organic product is extremely effective at cleaning, but also super gentle on skin. It scored an “A” rating from the EWG — the highest rating a product can receive. Also, it’s a concentrate, so you can get a ton of bang for your buck, depending on how much you dilute the liquid. The cleaning opportunities are limitless with this product!
Meliora Gentle Home Cleaning Scrub
We love the simplicity of this scrub. The only ingredients in this Meliora home cleaner are baking soda, vegetable soap, peppermint oil, and tea tree oil. This gentle product is Made Safe approved, just $14, and super tough on grease. If you’re looking for a sign to trade in your old home cleaner for a new one, this is it.
