In Fitness & Health: Choosing the Best Fitness Trainer

Fitness trainers are more than friends — they’re allies who will push you through all of your workout goals! Here's how to find the right one for you.

Like a partner, they see you through your best and worst days.

Your fitness trainer needs to be someone you can trust.

After all, a fitness trainer is someone to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, on cheat days and through thigh busting squat workouts.

So, the challenge is . . . how do you find the trainer that’s right for you?

1. Make sure they are someone that you can trust.

While having the most popular trainer in the world may look good on paper, you’re not going to make any progress if you don’t trust them. In order to help you, your trainer needs to know everything that’s going on with your body. Trainers are our allies. Their job is to help us improve ourselves. They want not only what’s best for us but what’s most healthy. But if we’re not honest with them they can’t do that. A trainer isn’t someone you have to impress. Trainers are supposed to meet you where you are at and help you improve over time.

2. Make sure they are someone you can respect

If you want anything to get done during your training sessions, not only does your trainer need to be someone you can trust, but someone that you respect. From the outside exercise can look rather silly. The human body makes a lot of awkward floppy movements when we try to make it stronger. But it’s because of this that a trainer needs to be someone you look up to. After all, you need to trust that they have your best interests at heart. Thus, it’s important to work with someone with who you not only see eye to eye, but someone you want to prove your best.

3. Make sure they are reliable

A trainer’s purpose is to hold you accountable. Who else is going to make sure you’re going to do all fifty of your pushups? That’s why it’s important to find a trainer that you can rely on not only on an emotional level but in every possible way. Having a trainer as a consistent presence in your life makes it easier to challenge yourself. It’s easier to face down the impossible when you have a dependable team backing you up. When you’re working out the only person you need to worry about is yourself. If your trainer isn’t reliable, how are you supposed to hold yourself accountable?

4. Look for someone who isn’t too judgmental

Trainers are supposed to inspire their clients to improve. But, if a trainer only reprimands you this dynamic is not productive in the long term. Thus, it’s important to find a trainer that will encourage you to rise above your mistakes.

Picking the right fitness trainer is a rather personal decision. But if you follow these tips hopefully that process will be a lot easier.
