The Definitive Night Skincare Routine

The Definitive Night Skincare Routine

Are you still trying to figure out the perfect night skincare routine? We have you covered. Follow these steps to achieve your skin goals!

Creating the perfect night skincare routine can be a bit tricky in the beginning.

Everyone’s skin is different and you’ll have different needs — here are some steps to get you started toward smooth and healthy skin.

Whether you're a complete minimalist or enjoy a 12-step process, finding a night skincare routine is crucial to your skin's health. Although everyone is different and there isn't a catch-all remedy, following these tips will improve your wellbeing.

Step 1: Remove your makeup

Sleeping in your makeup is heresy in the skincare game. Sleeping with a full face can cause acne, premature aging, inflammation, and dry skin if you aren't careful. A gentle makeup remover is the first step to a good night skincare regimen.

Look for products that contain micellar water. Micellar water is potent enough to get rid of waterproof mascara while still remaining gentle on the skin. You can consider double-cleansing with an emulsifying oil, or stick to reusable makeup remover pads.

Step 2: Use a gentle cleanser

After removing your makeup, you can start washing your face. Using a gentle cleanser can get rid of dead skin, oil, dirt, bacteria, and other harmful pollutants. You can also use this step as part of your morning routine.

The cleanser that works best for you will depend on your skin type. Avoid products with sulfates, as they can be too harsh on the skin. If you have normal or dry skin, look for hydrating products with peptides. A mild exfoliating cleanser with salicylic acid will work best for oily or acne-prone skin.

Step 3: Toner

Toners and essences help prime your skin to absorb other active ingredients. Toners usually refer to liquid products aimed toward complexions that need gentle exfoliation or resurfacing. Choosing the right product will depend on your skin type. Look for glycolic or salicylic acid products if you have oily or an acne-prone complexion. Older toners are meant to balance.

You should consider essences If you have dry skin, as they're more hydrating. Find formulations with hyaluronic acid to add moisture. You can use your hands or a cotton pad to apply these products.

Step 4: Treatment and serum

Treatments and serums will provide your skin with most of the active ingredients your face needs. It's essential to do this step after using toner/essence and early on in your regimen. You can customize your routine and products during this step to meet your skin's specific needs.

Look for serums with peptides and growth factors for a night skincare product. Drier complexions should opt for lipids, hyaluronic acid, and peptides. If you have acne-prone skin, find ingredients like stem cells, retinol, and green tea.

Step 5: Eye cream

An eye cream can be applied at the end of your routine or the very beginning. Use eye cream earlier in your routine if you tend to forget this step. Be sure to gently apply the product all the way around your eyes with your ring finger. This application ensures you aren't tugging at the delicate skin around your eyes.

Shop for peptides, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and even caffeine products. Peptides will help tighten the skin around your eyes and make your skin appear less puffy. The other ingredients mentioned will lock in moisture and strengthen your skin.

Step 6: Moisturize

Last but certainly not least: moisturizing. Moisturizers are meant to hydrate and seal hydration at the same time. That's why these products tend to be a bit thicker than other formulas. Look for products with humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid as they pull in water. Ceramides can seal the outer layers of your skin, as well.

You may also want to consider using different moisturizers for the morning and the night. You may prefer lighter formulas in the morning, as they'll blend better with your makeup. Heavier, richer creams can be reserved for the evening.

The perfect night skincare routine will depend on your skin type, circumstances, and goals. You can utilize the steps provided above to ensure you're applying products in the correct order. Achieving glassy skin and a clean complexion takes time; but with consistent effort, you are sure to reach your skin goals.
