Magnesium is one of the most commonly used, and effective, supplements on the market. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in our body, regulating over 300 metabolic reactions that are essential for human health. Some of these include: energy production, blood pressure regulation, nerve signal transmission, and muscle contraction. Having low levels of magnesium has been linked to illnesses and bodily issues, such as: heart disease, diabetes, poor muscle contraction, mood disorders, and migraines.
Magnesium is present in many foods, such as: leafy greens, legumes, nuts, and seeds. However, most Americans don't meet their daily recommended intake of magnesium, making it one of the most commonly supplemented nutrients around.
Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which is something our bodies require but don't produce on their own. Without omega-3 fatty acids in our systems, our bodies will shift to using omega-6, which can cause a plethora of issues, such as heart disease. Fish oil also contains DHA, which has been believed to help combat depression.
One of the main reasons our diets are not so high in omega-3s is because most people aren't eating as much fish as they did years ago. While many people do consume fish regularly (amazing source of omega-3), the common American diet does not include the recommended dosage of these fatty acids. This is when fish oil can beneficial as a supplement.

So instead of five reps, you may be able to now push six to seven reps out instead! Creatine doesn't directly increase muscle growth, but it does indirectly help you push harder and recover faster, which are both very beneficial for muscle growth.
Another supplement that's more aimed towards fitness goals is protein powder. Protein powder is a widely discussed supplement because many claim it to be unnecessary or harmful. While it may not be necessary for those whose regular diet includes a heavy amount of natural protein, it is beneficial to those who struggle to reach the daily recommended levels through diet alone.
Protein is an essential macronutrient in our diets that comes in many different forms, the biggest being various meats. Recommended protein levels vary based on a ton of different things such as: weight, height, age, gender, and activity levels. Not getting enough protein in your diet can heavily influence your exercise regimen in a negative way, even impeding progress and stalling muscle growth (assuming this is your goal).
While not always needed, protein powder can be a very convenient way of reaching your recommended levels of the macronutrients. You can cook with it, make smoothies/milkshakes, or even just throw it in a bottle with some water. It's a very convenient supplement, especially for those with diet restrictions that don't allow for much meat consumption.
While we strive to reach a level of healthiness through diet and exercise, it's not always so easy to get all the nutrients our bodies need through eating. Whether you're unable to eat certain foods, or simply can't afford the time or money to cook every single meal, getting the proper nutrients doesn't have to be impossible.
