Period 101: Tampons, Pads, and Menstrual Cups...Oh My! Which Should You Use?

There are tons of options to use when it comes to your period protection, but what’s right for you? We got you covered, because class, period 101 is now in session!

Tampons, pads, menstrual cups… what do you choose? Well, we’ve got you covered with some period 101 basics.

Here’s the difference between tampons, pads, and menstrual cups to help you decide what’s right for your time of the month.

When Aunt Flo comes to town once a month, it can be annoying. We just want to go about our day without having to worry about leaking. That’s why it’s vital to pick a form of protection that’s right for you — it’s standard period 101 when choosing a pad, tampon, or even menstrual cup.

Tampons

Tampons are little plugs made of cotton that fit securely inside your vagina and soak up menstrual blood. Some tampons come with a plastic or cardboard applicator that helps you insert the tool. All tampons have a string at the end to help remove once it’s been inserted for four to eight hours. You can’t feel a tampon when inserted.

Pads

Pads are narrow pieces of material that stick to your underwear so you can avoid leaking onto your clothes. Like tampons, they can stay on for four to eight hours, depending on how heavy your flow is.

Period cups

Period or menstrual cups are shaped like little bowls. They’re made of rubber or silicon and can be inserted inside your vagina to catch your blood. Most cups are reusable, which can save you money in the long run! Just remove, wash, and use it again. Don’t use this option if you have an IUD, as it can remove the contraception.

Which should you use?

Honestly, it is up to you! Most use tampons in the day and pads at night since you can’t leave a tampon inserted for too long. Some like the convenience of not repurchasing tampons/pads and use a period cup. All are perfectly safe options.
