Beating imposter syndrome is a necessary step for increasing your self-esteem and booking more clients. Here’s how.
Beating imposter syndrome doesn’t have to feel like David vs. Goliath.
You can overcome feelings of self-doubt and book more clients with these tips in mind.
Do you have nagging feelings that you don’t belong, or that you aren’t qualified for your position or life circumstance? Don’t worry if you do. These feelings are more common than you think, but leaving these emotions unresolved can lead to anxiety, depression, and career burnout. Here’s how beating imposter syndrome will improve your well-being and help you push your career forward in a meaningful way.
What is imposter syndrome?
Although it’s commonly referred to as a syndrome, imposter phenomenon might be a better term. The imposter phenomenon or experience was first recognized in 1978 by two American psychologists, Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes. Imposter syndrome is characterized by feelings that you aren’t qualified, aren’t good enough, are undeserving, and haven’t earned what you’ve achieved.
These feelings are more common than you might think and show up in high-achievers, women, BIPOC individuals, and even members of the LGBTQ+ community. Up to 82% of people might feel like an imposter, depending on the demographic.
However, there are steps you can take to overcome feelings of inferiority, self-doubt, and like you’re “winging it.”
1. Write your qualifications
Feeling like an imposter can cause cognitive distortion. You have qualifications, accomplishments, and success, but you still don’t feel worthy for some reason. You can combat these feelings by making a list of your qualifications and focusing on the facts.
Write at least 10 things that show you’re qualified for your position or the position you want. Ask yourself if there’s any reason that you are less capable than another person for this person. What makes you more qualified?
2. Celebrate your achievements
Imposter syndrome makes it difficult to celebrate success and achievements. You may brush off big wins and little accomplishments, making the feelings even worse. If you receive a new client, celebrate! Take time to speak positively about yourself, applaud your results, and receive compliments. You can print out or save positive reviews and feedback as a reminder of your success.
3. Talk it out
“When in doubt, talk it out.” Talking about your feelings can reduce loneliness and invite compliments from people you trust. The people in your life might have similar feelings as you do. Not only can you connect and empathize, but they can show you the positive sides of yourself that you’re missing. Vent to trusted people in your inner circle that see you for you!
4. Practice positive self-talk
How you talk to yourself can have an incredible impact on how you feel. Imposter syndrome might lead you down a rabbit hole of negative self-talk and self-doubt. Over time, these thoughts can become habitual and dampen your success. But, you can take control of your beliefs with positive self-talk. An easy way to start is to add your name to a positive affirmation. For example, you might say, “Cassandra is confident,” when you’re feeling low.
Feelings of inferiority, self-doubt, and like you’re “winging it” can prevent you from taking risks. You might feel anxious about seeking more clients, or you might not show off your best work on Instagram and charge less than you’re worth. Beating imposter syndrome will help you see your value. Letting go of limiting beliefs, practicing positive self-talk, and sharing your feelings are just a few ways to start taking back control.
