You’ve probably heard the saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” This month for National Camera Day on June 29th, take a picture that’s worth talking about with these helpful tips for improving your photo taking skills!
Get to Know Your Camera Settings
Even if you don’t have a professional camera, you can still take amazing photos on your phone thanks to recent advances in technology. Get to know the different features on your smartphone cameras such as portrait mode, camera grid, and shooting mode options. Having an understanding of your device's basic functions will instantly improve your photography skills.

Composition
Most good photographers are aware of the rule of thirds, and you should be too. Knowing how to use this rule to your advantage will help you with the composition and balance of your photos. Start by imagining that the photo is divided up into 9 equal parts. (On some phone cameras you can turn on a grid that will automatically do this for you.) Horizontally, divide the picture into two equally spaced lines. Scenic photos should have the landscape’s horizon closer to the rule of thirds than to the center of the photo.
Lighting
Good lighting can make or break a photo. Outdoor natural light works wonders for photos when you know where to position your subject in relation to the sun. If you want more of a silhouette, shoot the photo toward the sun. If you want a clearly lit up subject, have your subject face the sun. For a dreamy effect, try snapping your pictures during the golden hour which occurs just after sunrise and right before sunset. If natural light isn’t an option, there are many affordable lighting kits and ring lights available to light your photos to perfection. One great place to find them is Amazon.
