Skincare Routine 101: How Often to Use Skincare Products

We all use the products, but do we actually know what we're doing? Here is a little skincare routine 101!

Skincare routine 101: class is officially in session!

You’ll find easy-to-understand directions on all of your skincare products, but the amount of times you should be using them tends to get a little fuzzy. Some people say you should use certain products once a day. Sometimes it’s just once a week. There are so many to keep track of, it’s easy to forget. What’s worse is that many products put the directions on the packaging, so if you throw that away, you no longer have the directions for your product. Sometimes all you need is a helpful guide, so here is a little skincare routine 101 to help you out!

clean

Facial Cleansers

Most dermatologists will tell you that it’s important to wash your face with a cleanser twice a day, morning and night, to remove dirt, bacteria, and impurities from the day. It’s also important that you choose products that work for your skin type.

scrub

Facial Scrubs

Face scrubs control the buildup of sebum in your skin. Because of this, it’s recommended you use a face scrub 1-2 times a week, and even 3 times a week if your skin is particularly oily. Your skin sensitivities are something to take into account when purchasing a face scrub as you won’t want one that’s too abrasive.

toner

Toners

You should use a toner the same amount of times you use your cleanser, so morning and night. If you find it’s drying your skin too much, use it once a day or even every other day and monitor your skin’s reaction to it.

serum

Serums

Serums are the first product that should be applied to your skin after cleansing and toning. This means you should also use this the same amount of times as the other two, morning and night. Sunscreen should be applied after this during the day, and at night you should apply a moisturizer afterward.

moisturizer

Moisturizers

Moisturizers should also be used in the morning and night, but you should actually have different products. Make sure you buy a day moisturizer to use in the morning that will protect it from the environment and a night moisturizer that has repairing properties.

oils

Oils

This will depend on your skin type. Some oils can clog your pores and cause breakouts if you’re prone to it. If you have a particularly oily face, you can use face oils once a day at night or every other day. If the product doesn’t bother you, you can use it 1-2 times a day, morning and night.

esthetician

Treatments

Depending on the type of treatment you’re doing, this could range from once a week, to every 4 weeks. If you’re doing an intense facial, you should only do these once every 4-6 weeks. If you’re doing an at home facial that isn’t as intense, you can get away with doing it once every other week.

mask

Face Masks

Face masks are typically done 1-2 times a week depending on the mask. Some products are milder, like sheet masks and you can do them more frequently. The more intense masks should be done once a week.

Eye Creams

You should use eye creams twice a day, but have different products for the time of day. You should use depuffing eye creams during the day that typically help reduce swelling in your lids from sleeping or allergies. At night, choose a more restorative cream that works overnight to protect your skin.

You don’t need all of these products, and it’s okay if you don’t use them at the correct times. You know your skin better than anyone, and it will be trail and error until you find the perfect skincare routine for you! If you need a little help, this skincare routine 101 guide will do just the trick.
