Meet our Special Effects PRO, Taye, from Des Moines, Iowa! Taye wasn’t always interested in recreating the gruesome, murderous looks. Her love for makeup started in high school. Like all other teens going through puberty and dealing with the occasional breakout, she wanted to do everything she could to prevent those nasty flare-ups. She would spend her days practicing makeup looks until they were perfect, which is when her passion for beauty started.
Taye is mostly self-taught and continues to grow and expand her expertise through endless amounts of Youtube videos and practice. Not only has she mastered the beautiful, elegant side of makeup but also the ability to transform faces into gore-covered victims. She advises people this Halloween to first figure out what face shape you are and then contour…A LOT. She says this is the best way to create the sullen cheek look. Once you have achieved the sullen face, you can become anything you want from there; skeleton, demon, zombie, anything spooky! To achieve the best, most believable characters, she says, it is important to get good quality blood imitators. Even though it’s just one night of boos and shrills, she says, it is worth it to complete your scary look! She jokes chunky blood is ALWAYS most believable!
To execute a scary look, you must first learn the skills and techniques to transform someone's face into something else. Her favorite job thus far was doing makeup for Shrek The Musical. Even though it is a family, fun, fairy tale, there are numerous looks that all require different techniques. Taye was mesmerized and thrilled by the magical makeup looks she created for the show that ranged from mystical to strange by adding her own creative spin on some. Makeup jobs like these can take hours, so, throughout her career, Taye has learned makeup is not only about completing the desired look for the job, but it is also about meeting people, getting to know them, their journey, and their background, that ultimately leads to creating and solidifying friendships.
