Head lice is a common ailment that can be difficult to get rid of. We rounded up our top three natural remedies.
Let’s take a look:
1. Lavender oil
Lavender oil is a super-safe essential oil that has been used for decades to treat a variety of conditions. Dissolve a couple of drops into 10 mL of water and use as a hair wash. Use this method once a week for three weeks for best results. Lavender oil is also a great product to deter lice from appearing in the first place. Oh, and it smells great too!
2. Tea tree oil
Another wonder essential oil with a multitude of potential health and beauty uses: tea tree oil. This essential oil is a popular natural lice treatment. There’s promising research on the effectiveness of using it, too. You can mix it with shampoo or combine it with a carrier oil, such as coconut or olive. Apply either of these mixtures to the affected scalp and leave to work for at least half an hour before washing out, and voila! Safety note: many essential oils, including tea tree oil, are toxic to pets, through ingestion and inhalation. Make sure you keep your furry friends safe and out of harm’s way when using them.
3. Olive oil
We mentioned olive oil as a carrier, but did you know it also contains properties that help to suffocate lice and prevent them from coming back? Olive oil is touted as one of the most effective natural methods to get rid of lice, and, bonus — it’s also soothing and moisturizing for the hair and scalp too. Win-win!
