Practicing Self-Care for Tough Times
Keeping in good physical and mental health is super important, but self-care for tough times can feel like a struggle. We can help!
Self-care for tough times isn’t easy. We know we should prioritize our mental and physical health, but everything feels like a struggle. There is hope!
Try these practical tips to look after yourself when life gets overwhelming.
When things are going well, putting ourselves first seems straightforward; but self-care for tough times can feel a little trickier. When we experience chronic stress, difficult life events, and mental and physical exhaustion, it’s not always as easy. Here are some realistic self-care tips to help you cope when things get too much.
Find gentle movement
The last thing you want to do when you’re struggling is get out and exercise — we know! But even just some light stretching from the comfort of your bed can make a real difference. Try a few relaxing yoga stretches each day, right after waking up and just before you go to sleep, and notice how it makes you feel.
Allow yourself time to rest
With hustle culture, resting can feel like cheating and can induce feelings of guilt in some people. However, respite is essential, especially when times are hard. Giving yourself space to recharge may not seem like a big deal, but it will allow you to process your feelings and listen to what your body and mind need. PSA: if you need a nap, take one!
Reach out
Another thing many of us are guilty of when times are tough is closing ourselves off to the outside world. Sometimes interacting with others can feel like too much of a stretch. Nevertheless, it’s important to let at least one trusted person know what’s going on, even if it’s a simple text to a close friend or family member.
