A nice pedicure looks great, but there is something you should know. An unsanitary nail salon isn’t just gross, it’s hazardous to your health. The last thing you want is a toenail fungus or painful infection. Here are some things to watch out for before you sit down for your pedicure.

Sterilized Tools
The tools used on each client should be sterilized. The nail tech should not be using the same metal tools on a new client without having them thoroughly cleaned and disinfected first. Find out how the tools are sterilized at your salon to make sure that proper measures are being taken.
Clean Foot Baths
It’s a dirty little secret that whirlpool foot baths are a big hidden danger when getting a pedicure. Often they are not cleaned properly and can be a home to harmful bacteria. Whirlpool footbaths should be cleaned for at least 10 minutes with a professional disinfectant, but let’s be honest, often the nail tech just quickly washes out the whirlpool. Some Used Tools Should be Thrown Out
There are some items that just shouldn’t be reused. Things like cotton balls and wooden tools should be disposed of after use. If there are a lot of used items hanging around the station, it’s not a good sign for the salon’s overall cleanliness.

The nail tech licenses should be displayed in the salon. A licensed nail tech goes through the proper training to be able to give a safe service. For the sake of your health, you don’t want someone who isn’t a licensed nail technician performing a service on you.
