Say Goodbye to Fake News: Easy Tips on Evaluating News Sources

With everything going on in the world, it is good always be evaluating news sources while keeping up with the latest.

Evaluating news sources should be very important when you’re consuming serious topics.

So many things are happening all over the world every single day. It seems that hard-hitting news happens daily; however, not every news article you read is the real deal. In fact, anyone can start a website and claim that it is a news site. Before you believe everything you read, we are saying goodbye to fake news with these easy tips on evaluating news sources.

about

Read the About Us Page

For every news website you visit, you should always read their ‘About Us’ page. From there, you should be able to find out who or what organization runs the site, what their mission statement is, and any other information that pertains to how they find sources or get their news. Warning signs to look out for is no ‘About Us’ page, only one individual running the news site, biased and nonfactual information, and if they don’t have any credible sources.

Look Out for Quotes & Who Said Them

Most credible news sources include quotes that pertain to the article. If the news article you are reading includes quotes, you need to see who the website is quoting. Are they professional in the subject you are reading about? What are their credentials? Were they affected by the subject you are reading about? How were they affected? If you could answer all these questions without any issues, then you are one step closer to a credible source. However, if you don’t know or can’t find out who they are, then it is most likely not a verified source.

Search for the Same News on Multiple Sites

Any time you read any type of news, you should always double-check to see if any other publications or websites have reported the same news. If three or more credible news websites have written posts about the subject, then you are most likely in the clear. For this step, don’t be afraid to copy and paste the headline into a search engine.

Reverse Image Search

Many non-verified news websites use images that don’t belong to them. These non-verified news websites will pull images from other credible and non-credible websites. In some news articles, they will use old news images if it makes a bigger impact. Reverse image search into Google Images to see where the photo originated from.

Now that you are well-versed in evaluating news sources, you can finally relax and stay in the know when it comes to what is happening in the world. And, if you need help in verified news sources, always check out BBC News, CNN news, or NPR.
